Why Omis Deserves a Spot on Your 2026 Travel List

Welcome to Omis, Croatia! This town sits where the Cetina River canyon opens to the Adriatic Sea, with tall limestone cliffs all around. Unlike other spots on the Dalmatian coast, Omis has kept its authentic charm. Its narrow stone streets buzz with local life, the taverns (konobas) serve fresh seafood caught that morning, and the fortress ruins above offer stunning views.

Best Areas to Stay in Omis

Where you stay makes a big difference to your trip. The region stretches about 20 kilometres along the coast and extends into the hills. So your experience will vary depending on where your accommodation is. Let's look into the main areas.

Omis Town Centre

If you want to be within walking distance of restaurants, the centre, and the main beach in Omis, staying in or immediately above the centre is the best choice. The town itself is small enough to explore on foot in an hour.

Villas in the hills just above the town, like Villa Ada and Villa Casa Vita, give you the best of both worlds. You can enjoy Adriatic views over the rooftops and the Cetina canyon from your terrace and pool. The beach and restaurants are only a 10- to 15-minute downhill walk or a quick 3-minute drive. The only catch is that having a car makes it easier to get back up the hill.

It has a long sandy beach, a cluster of beachfront restaurants, and a few small supermarkets. Some of the best villas in the Feriehome collection, including the beachfrontVilla Erce, are here.

Stanići is famous for its sunsets. The main beach, called "the Big Port" (Velika Luka), faces west, so the summer sun lights up the water and cliffs until late in the evening. Many locals say it’s the best place in Croatia to watch the sunset.

The area feels quieter and more upscale than the centre. There are only a few beachfront restaurants and bars. Villas in Stanići, such as Villa Admira Maria, usually offer a great view of the coast.

But the trade-off is clear. You’ll need a caras the beach is a 10- to 15-minute drive away. But for anyone who loves space and privacy, the hinterland villages are a great choice. Villa Delmati in Tugare, with its private tennis court and pool, is a good example.

Best Beaches: From Sandy Shores to Hidden Coves

The Omis Riviera stretches about 20 kilometres along the coast. It offers a wide variety of beaches, including sandy, pebble, and rocky options. This guide highlights the best ones to help you pick the perfect spot for your vacation day.

Velika Plaza (Big Beach): The Sandy Town Beach

Velika Plaza is the main beach of the Riviera. It is a long sandy beach. The shallow water stays knee-deep for 100 to 200 metres, making it one of the safest and most comfortable places for young children.

Velika Plaza has great facilities. You can rent sunbeds and parasols, play beach volleyball, or try jet skis, SUP boards, and pedal boats. Nearby parking is available.

Here’s a local tip: the western end of the beach, near the mouth of the river Cetina, is often a few degrees cooler. It is because the fresh water from the Cetina mixes with the sea, which is a nice bonus on hot summer days.

Duće Beach: The Family Paradise

Duće is actually a stretch of sandy beaches that runs about six kilometres along the coast. The sand is fine and golden, the sea is shallow, and there are many beachfront restaurants. It has available parking space.

Duće has a relaxed atmosphere with a more local vibe. The Shooko Beach Bar is a popular spot for cocktails, laid-back music, and enjoying the sand between your toes.

Brzet: Pebbles and Pine Trees

Brzet is the most popular beach on the Riviera, about a 15-minute walk from the Old Town. The promenade was updated in 2020 and is lined with cafes and restaurants, with an available parking lot in Omis

Brzet stands out for its crystal-clear water. The cool shade under the pines is a real treat, and the snorkelling along the rocky edges of the bays is among the best on the Riviera. There is also a designated dog beachat the far end of Brzet.

Ruskamen: The Hidden Gem

Ruskamen sits below the village of Lokva Rogoznica. It is often called the Riviera’s best-kept secret. Ruskamen has several small coves surrounded by pine trees and rocky cliffs, so each cove feels like your own private bay.

This area is known as one ofDalmatia’s top windsurfing spotsbecause of the steady afternoon winds along the coast. Snorkelling and diving are also great here, with interesting underwater rock formations and lots of marine life. One of the coves is set aside as a naturist beach.

Stanići Beach (Velika Luka): The SunsetBeach

The main beach at Stanići, Velika Luka, is famous for one of Croatia's most beautiful sunsets. Because it faces west, the summer sun stays over the water until late in the evening. Because of that, the sky turns orange, pink, and violet. The water is clear and calm, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The settlement stretches along 3 km of coastline, divided into three distinct areas: Mala Luka, Velika Luka, and Zavode — each with its own character and charm. Parking is available.

Bonus: Vruja Covefor Diversrs

Just a short drive south of Omiš, Vruja is widely regarded as one of Croatia's best scuba diving spots. Local legend says there is an ancient sunken city beneath the water. The trip has three sections. The first part is calm and scenic. After a break for swimming and optional cliff jumping, the rapids get stronger, reaching Class II to III. This is exciting but still safe for families with children. Some operators allow children as young as 2 to accompany their parents, while others require children to be at least 6 years old.

Zip-Line Over the Cetina Canyon

The zipline is one of the most thrilling adventure experiences. Operated by Zipline Croatia, it offers beatufiul view of the Cetina and its canyon.

The whole experience takes about 2.5 hours and is well worth it. It includes a safety briefing, equipment fitting, and two short practice cables before you go over the canyon. Two professionals stay with each group throughout.

Sunset kayaking tours are particularly memorable. MOCO Adventures offers small-group tours for kayaking and other coastal activities.

Omis in Croatia - History and Culture

The Pirate Fortress Trail

Omis has a pirate heritage. Between the 12th and 15th centuries, the town served as a base for pirates. Their secret weapon was their ship design. Omis Arrows (Omiske Strijele) were fast, agile vessels with a shallow draft. That let them quickly move upriver to escape pursuit. Heavier warships could not follow this maneuver.

If you want to see the views of Omis Old Town, there are two fortresses that still stand from this era. TheMirabella Fortressis on a rock just above the Old Town. The entrance fee is €3- €5. The Starigrad Fortress (Fortica) sits 262 metres up on a ridge above the town and offers even more dramatic panoramas.

Visit Omis Old Town

The compact Old Town is great to explore on foot. Narrow stone streets wind past Romanesque churches, small shops, and traditional konobas. Poljicka Square is the main social spot, especially in the evening. That's when locals meet for coffee, gelato, and people-watching.

Every summer, Omiš hosts the Festival of Dalmatian Klapa, a traditional a cappella singing. A UNESCO-recognised cultural event has been runningsince 1966. The 2026 edition marks the festival's 60th anniversary. If your visit coincides with the festival (typically in July, with preliminary events in June), attending an evening performance at an open-air venue is a uniquely Croatian experience.

Krka National Park(about 100 km): Known for its beautiful waterfalls and swimming spots, Krka is perfect for a full-day trip. Arrive early to avoid the crowds. Companies like Transfer.hr offer day-trip packages from Omiš.

Islands of Brač and Hvar: You can take Jadrolinija ferries from Split for day trips to the islands. Brač is best known for Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn), one of Croatia's most photographed beaches. Hvar, on the other hand, has lavender fields, vineyards, and a lively nightlife.

Be sure to check the latest requirements on the official ETIAS portal before your trip.

Do I need Health Insurance?

EU citizens should bring a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Or, depending on where you are coming from, another insurance card to access state healthcare in Croatia. Remember, an EHIC does not replace full travel insurance, so make sure you have both before you travel.
