The Hollywood side of Dalamatia
Greetings, viewers! Do you enjoy watching films and having discussions about them with other film enthusiasts? What if you took your vacation to some of the most iconic and thrilling movie locations? Hollywood productions and television series have come to embrace Croatia as a filming destination because of its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural legacy. Croatia has everything, including breathtaking coasts and old cities. So gather things and make your way over for an incredible journey!
Whether you want to travel inland, along the coast, or around one of the islands, Dalmatia is a fantastic place to explore. There is no doubt that this region of the Adriatic continues to draw tourists from all over the world, as many travelers prove to year after year. There are hotels, villas, and apartments in every price range available for reservation, too. The offer for the growing number of tourists in Dalmatia is being expanded with the opening of new restaurants and events, but the region's natural beauty and the Adriatic Sea's clean waters are not the only factors contributing to this growth.
Dalmatia's reputation as a travel destination isn't just because of its breathtaking scenery and friendly people. Over the past decade or so, Dalmatia has gained popularity as a tourist destination due to its production by Hollywood and American cable networks. One such opportunity is that visitors can now reserve a villa or apartment at a Dalmatian location that "starred" in a film or television series.
The highly anticipated Mamma Mia musical sequel was shot in the fall of 2017 on the island of Vis, in what was undoubtedly the most impressive film production to date. Hollywood actors starred in the movie, which was set on a fictitious Greek island with ancient stone villas called Vis. Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, and Colin Firth are just a few names on the list.
A few months prior, the island of Pag functioned as a terror hotspot. Not literary, but a television series called The Terror was filmed in numerous sites on Pag island and executive-produced by the legendary Ridley Scott. It tells the story of what happened to the crews of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, two British ships that embarked on an ambitious voyage to the Arctic in order to force the Northwest Passage but never returned (loosely based on true events), and Pag, with its lunar landscape and pristine nature, proved an ideal setting for the story.
However, HBO's Game of Thrones is by far the most well-known show to have been filmed in Dalmatia; the show was filmed in Split (Diocletian's palace), Trsteno, Klis fortress, and the city walls of Dubrovnik. Many tourists either take guided tours to these locations or, if they're feeling particularly daring, explore the areas on their own. The filming has undoubtedly enhanced tourism and served to promote the history and beauty of these stunning locations in Dalmatia. Speaking of Dubrovnik, we also need to bring out another recent project that was shot there: Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This stunning old Croatian town served as the backdrop for the film.
And if you want to visit any of the locations, the local tour guides are very informed with all of the facts and tales from the filmings and would gladly share them with you on their tours. Finding accommodation is simple, with a nice selection of Dalmatian villas and modern flats near the filming areas. Prices vary, but it is not difficult to locate options that meet your budget. And who knows, maybe the villa you chose for your visit may appear in one of Dalmatia's upcoming worldwide productions.
