October is a cooler month. Daytime temperatures hover around 21 degrees, with sea temperatures staying the same early in the month. This is the best time of year for guests who prefer quiet towns, open hiking trails, and the season's lowest villa prices.
Traveling to Croatia In October?
By mid-August, the Dalmatian coast looks and feels different. Lines at Diocletian's Palace get shorter. It is easy to find parking by your favorite beach again, and the konoba that once needed a five-day reservation now has open tables on the terrace. Meanwhile, the sea has been warming since May and is warmer than it was in June.

Why Autumn Is The Smart Season In Croatia
September is a perfect choice. You can enjoy summer weather without the crowds, and villa prices drop. The Adriatic is warmest in late August, and that warmth lasts well into September. As school holidays end, the beaches clear out just as swimming is at its best.
Holidays in Croatia in October offer a different experience. You’ll still have many sunny days in your destination, and eating lunch outside in the sun is common for most of the month. But evenings are getting cooler, and rain is more likely in the second half. All in all, October is less about the beach and more about walking, food and wine, and enjoying quieter towns like Dubrovnik, Split, or Trogir Old Town.
So, the question is: is October a good time to visit Croatia? Yes, if you care more about sightseeing, hiking, or eating great food. While early October still brings beach days, by the end of the month, it definitely feels like autumn.
Sea temperatures and Weather in Croatia
These numbers are long-term averages for the Split area in central Dalmatia. While some weeks may differ, the overall pattern is consistent.

Next are two things to know. First, the sea in mid-September is actually warmer than in mid-June because water heats and cools slowly. Many guests are surprised by this. Second, when it rains in autumn, it usually comes in short, heavy bursts instead of long, grey drizzle, and the sun often returns the next day.
Choosing a villa with a heated pool takes away any worries about the weather. Pool heating keeps the water at 28 to 30 degrees, no matter the air temperature. So swimming in October becomes enjoyable instead of a challenge.
What a villa costs in September and October
This is the time of the year when autumn stands out. After the last week of August, nightly rates for our villas drop significantly.

As you can see, most guests save 25 to 40 percent on the same villa compared to August. So, October stays can be less than half the peak price. Minimum stay rules also loosen after summer. Many villas that require seven nights in peak season will accept four or five nights in autumn. Perfect for long weekends and exploring coastal towns.

What stays open and what closes
It’s worth asking about arriving in the off-season and finding everything closed. In central Dalmatia, though, things are better than most guests expect. Split is Croatia's second-largest city and stays lively year-round.
Open all through September and October
The historic centers of Split and Trogir, with their restaurants, museums, and cafes, are great to walk after summer ends. Krka National Park works shorter hours from October, while the Biokovo Nature Park and its Skywalk above Makarska depend on the weather. Konobas in Omiš and the inland villages, and wineries around Imotski work year-round. Jadrolinija ferries to Brač, Hvar and Šolta work reduced but regular timetables.

Winding down from late September
Beach bars and seasonal beach restaurants are closed. Some water sports operators on the Cetina River run into October when water levels allow. Always check before reserving your spot. Purely seasonal restaurants in smaller coastal villages also close until spring.

Travel Tips For Your Trip to Croatia
Swim in the mornings in the warm Adriatic Sea and explore in the afternoons. After the summer months, you can still enjoy the classic villa routine, with no rush to grab a spot on the beach early.
Go hiking in Biokovo and the Omiš hinterland. In summer, the heat makes these trails tough. But from late September, walking here is a pleasure. Enjoy the harvest season with amazing food and drink. Grape harvest happens in September, and olives are picked from mid-October. You can join organized olive-picking day trips and participate with locals. Bring home a premium Croatian olive oil or a bottle of red wine. A perfect authentic souvenir.
As for outdoor activities, try rafting on the Cetina River with fewer crowds. The canyon behind Omiš is open for rafting into autumn.
Take a ferry to an island for the day. In late September, Brač and Šolta look and feel like the Croatian islands from postcards. Zlatni Rat beach, crowded in August, becomes peaceful and picture-perfect again.
Time to explore Split. Visit museums, walk in Marjan Hill Park, and enjoy morning coffee on the Riva with the great view. October is the best time to enjoy the city.
